Who are your Heroes?
Who are your heroes? While many people would think of professional athletes, movie stars, and famous people, but that is never who I have looked up to. My heroes are those who have made a real difference in my life. The people that at some point and time seemed larger than life. When I was a child this was my Dad.
I always wanted to be with him. Whether that was riding on the back of his motorcycle, working on the farm, or riding with him in the truck. When I was afraid, he let me know that he was there. I could hold onto him and squeeze my eyes shut as he rode the motorcycle over and narrow board across the irrigation canal. At 4 years old I had to stand on the seat to see over the steering wheel when he put me into the truck and had me drive to the back of the farm. I followed his directions knowing that he would not let anything bad happen. I had absolute faith in him.
What kind of hero do I want to be? Teacher, entrepreneur, and co author of A Field Gide for the Hero's Journey, Jeff Sanders said in his address that we each have a special mission on this earth, one that will succeed only if we have the faith and courage to find our entrepreneurial mission. He gave council to that at the end of life, only 3 questions will matter. 1) Have I contributed something meaningful? 2)Am I a good person? 3)Who did I love and who loved me?
As I try to answer these questions in my life right now, I have a small idea of what I want to contribute. I know I am a baker, I know that is a talent that God has given to me, and I know I am called to share it with others. I love to see a person's face light up with they get a yummy looking treat. I also love to teach, and to share what I know with others. In my small town where this is not available, I know that I can make a difference in the lives of the community.
As I a good person? I hope so. In my heart I am a teacher, and I seek to make connections with others, especially the youth. We have limited opportunities for teenagers to gain valuable life skills. I have a desire to help, to build my community, and to help people better their lives.
Who do I love and who loves me? First and fore most, my family. Everything I do is for them, but beyond that, they need to know that I am present. Throughout my children's lives I have found ways to work from home and to make a different while always being present. I am committed to being present in my families lives, and making sure that nothing is more important to me than they are. Just as I always knew that my dad would be there, I want to be that hero to my children.
